Interview with John OO Fleming
- When on route to play in Malaysia he met up with DJ Tann (link to profile)
and kindly answered some questions
How did your dj career begin?
- At school my headmaster asked me if I would like to play at the school disco
as he knew that I collected records- but I had no clue what to do, so I gave it
a try and enjoyed it so much- from that day on I have played every day for 20
years
How was your family at the beginning when you started djing?
- djing was regarded not as a job but as a hobby and they kept saying ok you
have had the fun now get a real job but they knew my heart was in music
- obviously now that they see that I go around the world and get paid for it
they have a different view
How did your health problems effect your djing career?
- well all my friends at the time, Carl cox etc we could see that things were
happening in dance music and we started to get bookings all around the world
and then I was put in hospital with Lung cancer and in that 2 year period the
djing industry had taken off. So when I got back in it was completely changed
and I had to work harder just to get a booking as all the promoters and clubs
had changed.
How would you describe your current musical style
- That is a hard question, most people refer to me as a trance but the word
trance over the years has changed. I would say that I am a deep trance style
What do you prefer vinyl or records?
- I have been playing cds for over 4 years now
So what is your favorite cd/ track
- Difficult to say really as it changes. When I drop "God is a dj by faithless"
remix astral projection I get a great response, it is a very rare remix that
was only released in the Isreali territories
How many cds/ records do you own?
- No idea I have thousands, maybe 20,000 records in my garage and 3 large hard
drivers
- My nickname is the 21st century dj as I love gadgets
Where do you like playing?
- I like Australia, Israel has a good party scene and America is getting better
How does it feel getting so much attention?
- I just do it for the music I will never make a pop record or a greatest hits
album
What preparation do you make before a gig?
- Usually I walk around a absorb the feeling ion the dance floor, I don't get
nervous, I get in work mode and try and understand the crowd
Where do you think is good for buying music?
- I think that the internet is good and I have been downloading music for years
it allows you to find music that you would never get in your local record shop
Who do you look up to?
- producers, asrix, paul oakenfold, tiesto
What you enjoy most about the dj career- radio, producing, or
remixing?
- I enjoy them all, they all work together
What are you proud off?
- The label euphoria, I am working on version 3 of the white label series
What advise would you give young djs today?
- find your own sound don't just try and copy the sound that you think is
famous at this time like tiesto
